Palermo is taking over

david Apr 22 2008

Originally built as a neighborhood for the elite, Juan Manual de Rosas' 1800 hang out Palermo is now frequented by cool folk and designers. Palermo is broken up into various areas, but the one we're into is called Viejo. Check out the map.

Palermo is featuring fashions from 200+ designers at any given time, all in one place. Its kind of like a friendly mall/district/area thing. It has store, shops, boutiques, kiosks and parks. Most of the Designers who sell in the area also live in the area, giving a real meaning to the 100 mile fashion diet.

A quick trip back to the boutique for alterations will tell you that the stitching will most likely be done by the designer. Most designers feature their work on the street, namely Honduras, El Salvador, Armenia and Malabia. These streets mark the territory of the passionate and talented.

A true culture of sorts can be found in Palermo. Every style imaginable is available in some form, sometimes in inspired pieces. The average per item is around $40+, but keep in mind the conversion rate is about 3x the average American/Canadian dollar.

Obviously, Argentina is a bit out of the way for the common shopper but we think it may be worth the trip.
